22 Nations aware of the Dutch culture

In the past 5 years students form 22 different countries have been attending my classes on the Dutch culture & language at Fontys university Tilburg.

SHARING KNOWLEDGE IS A TWO WAY PROCESS

As I always say, while teaching I also learn. So, while giving classes on the Dutch culture & language I also got the opportunity to learnt a lot about the cultures of 22 counties as well. I would like to share at least one cultural information per country in this blog.

  1. Australia: Their love for Vegemite!

2. Austria: Easter egg battle

3. Belarus: writing down a wish, burning it and drinking the ash with the new year champagne.

4. Brazil: privileges and privilaged exits

5. Bulgaria: moving your head from side to side is a ‘yes’. Disagreeing? Then nod your head up and down.

6. Canada: easy going culture

7. Chile: abrazo, handshake and a hug while greeting family and friends.

8. China: 4 is an unlucky number, best avoided

9. Colombia: blend of beautiful music and dance

10. Denmark: Sankt Hans Aften, commemorating midsummer’s eve

11. France: Family is highly valued.

12. Japan: the art of ‘listening to  the air’ is taught at young and difficult to master for some.

13. Malaysia: children ‘give face’ to parents, by choosing a vocation as doctor or engineer.

14. Mexico: Hanal Pixan, celebrating the day of the dead

15. Scotland: new year tradition 1st of January, people visit with gift of whisky, bread and coal

16. Singapore: melting pot of diversity and cultures

17. South Africa: ‘rainbow nation’ with a passion for music and song

18. South Korea: cramming school for stats exams!

19. Spain: life begins late in the evening, dinner is very late around 10 pm

20. Taiwan: was partly a Dutch colony

21. Turkey: belief in the evil eye and hospitality is highly regarded.

22. Ukraine: Christmas is celebrated on the of 7th January.
